Two teens were shot while walking on the Lake Wilderness Trail in Maple Valley on Tuesday afternoon, and police quickly arrested two suspects and recovered a handgun that had been thrown into the woods.
A 16-year-old girl and her 18-year-old boyfriend were on the trail when they encountered two other teens, both males who are about 18 years old, said Sgt. John Urquhart of the King County Sheriff’s Office, which provides police services to the City of Maple Valley.
“Words were exchanged … Something to do with gang colors,” Urquhart said.
One of the two males pulled a gun and fired, striking the boyfriend in the shoulder, Urquhart said. The round passed through the boyfriend’s shoulder and hit his girlfriend in the head, he said. The two suspects ran off, ditching the gun as they fled; the boyfriend called 911 at 1:32 p.m., he said.

Both victims were conscious and talking when police arrived, “which is a good sign,” Urquhart said. Both were taken to Harborview Medical Center with what appeared to be nonlife- threatening injuries.
Based on descriptions provided by the victims, officers were able to arrest the two suspects about 30 minutes later, several blocks from the shooting scene near Maple Valley Highway, Urquhart said. Officers were trying to confirm the teens’ identities. They will either be booked into jail or into the King County juvenile-detention center, he said.
