Key Peninsula Middle School teacher Kareen Borders joined 103 of the best middle-school math and science teachers in the nation this year when she received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Technology.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) offers the award each year to kindergarten through sixth-grade teachers and to seventh- through 12th-grade teachers. This year focused on the upper age bracket.

Along with a $10,000 check from the NSF to be used at her discretion for her classroom, the award included an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., last month for several days packed with educational and celebratory events. Teachers toured the capital, met President Obama and connected with industry leaders.
