Everett police believe the man who abducted a 5-year-old girl from her apartment early Saturday and then dropped her off about a mile away headed south on the Interurban Trail, cut through a wooded area and walked west into a neighborhood in the 10900 block of 10th Drive Southeast.
Investigators hope some “alert resident” of the neighborhood saw the man walking by and will come forward with information, said police spokesman Officer Aaron Snell.
The neighborhood where the suspect is thought to have gone was identified by “man trackers” from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, he said. The site is a few blocks northeast of the girl’s apartment, making it appear as though the suspect doubled back to the area, Snell said.
Police were called around 4:30 a.m. Saturday after the partially clothed 5-year-old girl knocked at the door of an apartment in the 1300 block of Bruskrud Road in Everett and asked for help. Police took the child into their custody.

About an hour later, officers were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 800 block of 112th Street Southeast after a report of a screen missing from an open window. The occupant of the apartment was contacted and discovered his daughter was missing, Snell said.
Investigators say they think the kidnapper entered the girl’s ground-floor bedroom around 3 a.m. by removing the screen and climbing in by using a pallet as a ladder, he said.
A police dog was used to track a route along the Interurban Trail from the girl’s home to the apartment where she sought help, Snell said. Evidence was found along the route, but Snell declined to elaborate.
Snell said investigators believe the suspect was a stranger to the child. Though it appears he intended to sexually assault the girl, Snell said no sexual assault occurred. The girl was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation.
On Saturday, police released a link to a surveillance video they say shows the man leaving the girl’s apartment complex carrying something large, believed to be the child. The moving figure appears about 50 seconds into the video.
The man is described as dark skinned with dark-colored eyes. He is shorter than average, with a normal build and no facial hair or visible tattoos. He wore two earrings in each ear, one a gold stud and the second a white diamond.
He wore a white baseball or “painter”-style hat backward, a dark-colored shirt, light-colored jeans and green-and-blue tennis shoes, police said.
