A motorcyclist is in the hospital after skidding off the highway and severing his leg in Bellevue yesterday morning.

The man was turning onto Interstate 405 southbound from Interstate 90 around 6 a.m. and struck a sign post, said Sgt. Steven Babb of the State Patrol.

The force of the crash severed the man’s leg, and he was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Babb said.

The I-405 ramp was closed for about an hour while police investigated.

Community college gets $228,000 grant

Bellevue Community College was awarded a $228,000 grant recently from the National Science Foundation to upgrade the school’s information-technology (IT) program.

BCC’s National Workforce Center for Emerging Technologies will use the money to update the technology-skill standards that it teaches, officials said.

Most IT workers now work for businesses outside the technology sector, so they need new skills and business knowledge, officials said.

Library sponsoring 2 SAT workshops

Two SAT workshops — a practice exam and a strategy session — sponsored by the Bellevue Friends of the Library, will be held Sept. 17 and Sept. 21 at the Bellevue Regional Library.

The first session, at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 17, is a free practice exam. The deadline for the required advance registration is Sept. 9.

During the Sept. 21 strategy session, a test expert will discuss what is covered on the SAT and share tips on taking the exam. Registration is not required for the strategy session. Students do not need to take the practice test to participate in the strategy workshop, and parents are welcome to attend.

The library is at 1111 110th Ave. N.E. To register, call 425-450-1760.
