The Bothell firefighters union has set up a fund for the wife and six children of a Bothell firefighter in jail on charges of kidnapping, raping and beating an adult female relative.

Richard Allen Kirk, 36, pleaded not guilty to the charges last week in Snohomish County Superior Court. He remains in the Snohomish County Jail in lieu of $2 million bail.

The fund is designed to help Kirk’s family members “get their lives back on track” and help with day-to-day needs, according to the fire department.

Donations can be made to the Kirk Family Fund at any Washington Mutual branch.

Highway 522 lanes closing next week

Drivers should expect night lane closures on Highway 522 next week — from Northeast 155th Street in Lake Forest Park to 61st Avenue Northeast in Kenmore — as crews continue to resurface the deteriorating road.

Crews will close up to two lanes in either direction from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday. The state Department of Transportation doesn’t anticipate major delays.

Coulon Beach OK for swimming

Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park, 1201 Lake Washington Blvd. N., reopened for public swimming yesterday.

Lifeguards are on duty from noon to 8 p.m.

The beach was closed last week after the King County Health Department found excessive amounts of fecal coliform and E. coli bacteria. The health department has approved the reopening and will continue to take weekly water samples through September.
