Authorities are investigating a series of scams targeting nonprofits, including one scam that solicited nearly $10,000 from a Seattle-based group, Seattle police say.

The Seattle Hearing Speech and Deafness Center received an email in January saying a man would donate $30,000 to the organization, police say. So after the nonprofit received a check for $39,850, the scam convinced the group to hand over the difference, according to police. The check was fake.

Seattle fraud detectives believe other nonprofit groups in both Washington and Oregon potentially have been victims of similar scams, police say.

Investigators are asking anyone with information on the case, or other Seattle-area groups that have received similar offers, to contact them at 206-684-8981.
