The U.S. Department of Defense on Monday reported the deaths of two Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldiers in Afghanistan.

Staff. Sgt. Raul Guerra, 37, of Union City, N.J., who was assigned to the 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, arrived in Afghanistan in May. He was on his fifth tour of duty to a combat zone when he died Wednesday.
Guerra was assigned to Spin Boldak in southern Afghanistan’s Kandahar province. Army officials said the cause of his death was undetermined and is under investigation.
Guerra joined the Army in 1999 and served four tours of duty in Iraq between 2002 and 2008.

He arrived at Lewis-McChord in July 2011 and was in the 502nd Military Intelligence Battalion of the 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade. His awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign stars, and Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
Cpl. Juan P. Navarro died Saturday after a roadside blast, also in Kandahar, the Defense Department said. The 23-year-old Austin, Texas, man was in the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.
Cpl. Navarro entered the Army in 2008 and initially trained at Fort Benning, Ga. He was on his second deployment to Afghanistan.
His awards include Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Driver and Mechanic Badge.
