Readers Lens terms and conditions

  1. You must be a Washington state resident to submit a photo to The Seattle Times’ Reader’s Lens feature or our other photo contests. Selected photos will be featured in The Seattle Times newspaper and on seattletimes.com. Photos by professional photographers (a person whose occupation is photography and/or who earns a majority of his/her income as a photographer) are disqualified. A single photographer’s work is not eligible to be selected for the Seattle Times Reader’s Lens feature more than once every 90 days.
  2. By submitting a photo you represent that the photo is your own work and you legally possess copyright.
  3. For prizes: No purchase necessary to enter. Seattle Times photo contests are open to Washington state residents only and are void where prohibited by law. One prize winner per household in each contest (A. themed monthly contests, and B. Reader Photos of the Year).
  4. Employees, and immediate family members (dependents under IRS rules), contractors, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotional agencies of The Seattle Times are not eligible.
  5. How to enter: To enter, entrants must fill out a form and upload a photo at the following web address: seattletimes.com/submit-photos.
  6. Entries for themed monthly contests may be submitted between the first day of that month and the second to last Sunday of the month. Other entries for the Reader’s Lens feature may be submitted at any time. For consideration for the year-end Reader Photos of the Year judging, the submission cutoff will be in early December, with the exact date to be announced in the printed Seattle Times and on seattletimes.com no later than a week prior to the cutoff.
  7. Entries for the monthly themed contest must be received by the second to last Sunday of that month. Winners of the monthly themed contest will be selected by a Seattle Times photography professional, based on quality of the image, on or around the Monday before the final Sunday of the month. Winner need not be present to win. For the October and December themed contests, one winner each month will receive a Canon 200DG Digital Gadget Bag. Approximate value $49.95. No cash equivalent or substitution of any prize is offered.
  8. Seattle Audubon is sponsoring a special three-month themed contest during September, October and November 2016. Washington bird and/or bird-related photos may be submitted anytime between September 1 and November 20, 2016. Photos must have been made in Washington state to be eligible. Winners of the Audubon-sponsored contest will be selected by a panel of judges, including Art Wolfe, Gerrit Vyn, Paul Bannick, and a photojournalist from The Seattle Times. Winners will be notified on or around the week of November 21, 2016. One grand prize winner will receive an Uncruise Baja cruise package for two, valued at $7,990. One first prize winner will receive an Evergreen Escapes San Juans tour for two, valued at $1500. One second prize winner will receive one year of unlimited Seattle Audubon classes, valued at $500. One youth winner (photographers aged 15 or younger) will receive a Nikon DSLR camera, valued at $500. No cash equivalent or substitution of any prize is offered.
  9. Reader Photos of the Year are chosen from photos selected and displayed in the Reader’s Lens photo feature throughout that prior year, possibly including themed monthly contest winners. Entries for Reader Photos of the Year judging must be received by the announced cutoff date in December. Winners in that judging will be selected by Seattle Times journalists and photography professionals, based on the quality of the image, around the second week of December. Winner need not be present to win. Grand prize winner will receive a gift card or certificate valued at $250 redeemable at a Seattle-area camera shop of the Seattle Times’ choosing. Honorable Mention winners will receive gift cards valued at $25 redeemable at any Starbucks coffee shop. No cash equivalent or substitution of any prize is offered.
  10. To be eligible for the grand prize in any of our contests, photographer must agree and be available to be featured in a Seattle Times article about how the winning photo was obtained, with a photo of the winner.
  11. Winners of the Reader Photos of the Year judging will be notified, by phone or email, around the second week of December. Odds of winning depend on number of entries received.   12. Winners are responsible for all taxes and liabilities associated with each prize. The Seattle Times reserves the right to require any forms for eligibility and/or tax purposes within 7 days of notification and prior to prize redemption. Noncompliance may result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner. Contest entrants agree to abide by the terms of these official rules and by the decisions of the contest commissioners at The Seattle Times, which are final on all matters pertaining to the contest.
  13. By entering the Reader’s Lens, entrants grant The Seattle Times and contest sponsors the right to publish their submitted image in print, online and on social media in association with the contest. For all other purposes, the entrant maintains copyright for the image.
  14. The Seattle Times is not responsible for late, lost, or misdirected entries or any that lack sufficient postage; or any computer, online, telephone or technical malfunctions that may occur. The contest can be canceled, terminated, modified or suspended at any time for any reason by the aforementioned company.
  15. Entrants agree to release The Seattle Times, Reader’s Lens and all contest sponsors from any and all liability resulting from participation in the contest or use of any prize won. Entrants further consent to release to the aforementioned companies the use of each winner’s proper name, city, and state for purposes of advertising in any other media or trade in connection with the contest without further compensation. The aforementioned companies further reserve the right to use any and all information related to the contest, including information on contest entrants obtained through the contest, for marketing purposes or any other purpose, unless prohibited by law.This contest is sponsored by The Seattle Times, PO Box 70, Seattle, WA 98111-0070.
