small spaces can be especially challenging for avid gardeners. Local gardens offer lessons in how to use those spaces well, whether it's with color, structure or the strategically-placed object. Here are a few examples that may offer inspiration as you address your own challenges.

Size shouldn't inhibit inspiration, for a small garden is far easier to personalize than a vast one. In little spaces, an atmosphere or an accent can be created with a few well-chosen, colorful pieces. Your thinking need not be cramped in even the smallest garden — boldness makes a garden live large.

Containers are a gardener's best friend, especially in confined spaces, for nothing adds more interest while taking up such little space. Pots vary the planting levels in a garden, bringing flowers and foliage up above the rest of the fray to serve as a focal point.

It takes a spacious imagination to outwit small spaces. Boundaries concealed make a garden seem far roomier than it is. The lattice and mirror mounted on a fence lighten a dark corner while obscuring the garden's edges. The mirror also introduces illusion and reflection, two vital elements in small garden design.

Details that would be lost in a larger landscape can be appreciated in a small one. By drawing the eye downward to this tiny boot in the paver, or overhead by using an arbor, the garden feels as if it grows more ample. Scale is simply the relationship between ourselves and the space in which we move, so take full advantage of every dimension of that space.

above: No matter what the size, a garden should offer escape and enjoyment. This small side garden has been transformed from a narrow passageway into an intimate seating area. A bright hit of color goes a long way in a diminutive space, where every element counts.

right: The view out from the house is especially important in small gardens, where privacy is often an issue. A shallow back garden is effectively fenced off from the neighbors and given visual depth by level changes, a wide assortment of plants and the intriguing view of a sheltered bench.
