Photographer: Paul Weeks, Seattle
Photo taken: Jan. 18, White River Sno-Park, near Mount Hood, Ore.
Photographer’s description: “While snowshoeing under the full moon, I noticed a large halo around the moon and had to get a shot of it. Taken with a Nikon D800E.”
Expert says: “When I first looked at this photo, I thought the moon was the sun because it never really occurred to me that the moon can produce a halo, too. But as I looked closer I realized it was at night. I love that the snow is illuminated from the light emitted and that you can spot Jupiter on the right side of the moon. I kind of wish the foreground was a little more dramatic, but it’s also nice that it’s a simple landscape so as not to take away from the halo.”
