Photographer: Norberto Villanueva, Redmond
Photo taken: New Year’s Eve, from Kerry Park, Seattle
Photographer’s description: “I thought this image (of New Year’s fireworks) showed that the Space Needle was about to take off. Taken with a Canon 7D camera with Canon 300 mm f2.8 lens. I prepared three hours ahead for an eight-minute show.”
Expert says: “This photo goes to show being well-prepared can help produce a wonderful photo. The photographer used the rule of thirds perfectly, chose a great lens to get in tight to clean up the background and had the shutter speed at two seconds, just long enough to capture the fireworks path without overexposing. The slow shutter speed also allowed the smoke to wisp away, creating more of that ‘take-off’ effect.”
