Itching to get out of town? Want to bring the locavore thing home to your wineglass? Book now to tour a Yakima Valley vineyard this summer.

Why leave town: Because it’s interesting and educational to go see where your food is grown. Or your wine, for that matter.

What’s going on: A month of special visits at four of the Yakima Valley’s most distinguished vineyards.

When and where: Saturdays throughout July. At Red Willow Vineyard, July 7; DeBrul Vineyard, July 14; Upland Vineyards, July 21, and Boushey Vineyards, July 28.

What to expect: Educational tours by the growers, plus time for sipping a little wine, eating a little food, and other activities.

What’s special: These are respected growers of long standing. Red Willow offers covered-wagon rides up to its trademark stone chapel looking out at Mount Adams. Upland lets you explore Central Washington’s oldest surviving vineyard, with vines dating to 1917, in one of the state’s newer American Viticultural Areas, Snipes Mountain. At Boushey, owner Dick Boushey, Washington’s “father of syrah,” will educate visitors on the ins and outs of growing this popular wine grape.
