Level of difficulty: An easy, flat trail that’s wide enough for joggers and bike riders to share. The trail is wheelchair accessible, though on rainy days parts of the path can get muddy and harder to navigate.
Facilities: Boat launch and pier for bird watching and fishing. Plenty of benches and picnic tables flank the trail. There’s a picnic shelter and public restrooms near the parking lot.
Setting: The park runs along the Snohomish River, ideal for kayaking or other water recreation. You can also watch the local rowing club from the benches along the trail. Dog walkers, joggers and bike riders frequent here, especially early in the morning and on weekends. Birdwatchers love to hang out on the north end pier to watch waterfowl, raptors and shorebirds.
Highlights: The main Langus Riverfront Trail reopened in December after a half-year closure for dike maintenance. The trail starts off along the river and you will hear more birds and other wildlife as you go further south into the wetland area. For a longer walk, take the trail to the end and then cross over the bridge to Spencer Island Wildlife Reserve, a Snohomish County park. There’s a big waterfowl habitat and at least three miles of dirt-and-gravel trails around this area of wooded terrain and cattail marsh.
Note that part of Spencer Island, 232 acres, is a hunting area, though that area is clearly marked.
Restrictions: Leash and scoop law in effect. Open daily 6 a.m.- 8 p.m. November through March, 6 a.m.-10 p.m. April through October.
Directions: Take Interstate 5 North to Exit 195, turn left onto East Marine View Drive and continue for 1.2 miles to state Highway 529 North, go over the bridge and turn right onto 28th Place. At intersection, turn right onto 35th Avenue Northeast, left onto Ross Avenue, then follow the road to the right as it becomes Smith Island Road.
