Preserve Marriage Washington, the campaign to deny all state residents the opportunity to live their own lives, is recycling a television ad that is blatantly false.
The commercial features a Massachusetts couple with a seven-year-old complaint that was rebuffed by the federal courts. The ad is reused around the country, but repetition has not made the contents any more honest.
Approval of Referendum 74 will allow same-sex couples to marry in Washington. Period. The Big Lie of the anti-74 campaign, which already envisions all manner of calamities, supposes what “Schools Could Teach.”
Proponents of R-74 found lots of eager support to get the truth out:
- UW, Alaska Airlines agree to naming-rights deal for Husky Stadium's field
- Wife upset dad disappointed in baby's gender
- A couple thoughts on Fred Jackson, Kam Chancellor and the Seahawks
- Seahawks preseason awards: MVPs, surprises, disappointments, toughest roster calls
- Seattle teachers vote to strike if agreement isn’t reached

“There is absolutely nothing in R-74 or the new marriage law that will change anything at all in our schools or in our curriculum,” said Randy Dorn, state superintendent of public instruction. “To suggest any connection between the two is wrong and parents should be reassured that nothing will change under R-74 when it comes to our public schools.”
The referendum deals with legislation passed by the state Legislature and signed by Gov. Chris Gregoire. “Our laws are very separate in Washington and to suggest anything else is irresponsible and untrue,” said former GOP state Sen. Cheryl Pflug. “That’s precisely why Republicans crossed the aisle to support the bill.”
State Rep. Sharon Tomiko Santos, chair of the House Education Committee, notes that laws governing marriage and education are purposefully separate bodies of law. “That’s what makes this claim so offensive because it’s clearly not based on the facts.”
