Our students know who they are, what they want and what they value. They came to UW Tacoma for a reason and they leave with a purpose. Their thoughts, experiences and values inform our philosophy and make us who we are.

So, who are we?

We are first-generation college students. Many in our student body are the first in their families to attend college. They come from diverse backgrounds with different life experiences. We honor this and believe success is a collaborative effort.

We are solving real-world problems. Research done at UW Tacoma is focused on addressing the issues of today, from climate change to inequality. Faculty research at the Center for Urban Waters is helping clean up local waterways throughout the Puget Sound. Faculty and students at the Center for Data Science partnered with MultiCare to improve outcomes for hospital patients with heart disease.

We are community. Our unique blend of courses is meant to foster growth both on and off campus. The Milgard School of Business offers a board governance class where students serve as board members for local nonprofits. The Institute of Technology’s Managing Technical Teams course tasks students with helping others. Recently, a group of students built a website for an organization that provides housing to military service members and their spouses undergoing medical treatment.

We are urban. Our location in the heart of downtown Tacoma makes us a vital hub of activity. Our students learn and live in a thriving city rich with opportunity. Take a walk down our grand staircase and you’ll arrive in the middle of restaurants, shops, and museums. Hop on the Link and take a short ride to see a play or listen to live music.

We are all of these things and we are more. We are veterans, community college transfers, international students and people embarking on a second career. We are committed to access, to the idea that education is for everyone. This is what we value. This is who we are, and if this sounds like you then you are who we are.
