The minimalist trend defined 2015, with muted color patterns, clean lines and simple shapes. Consider that a palate cleanser for what’s to come in 2016.

Runways previewing 2016 collections showed big, bold styles, including florals, ruffles and ladylike detailing.

Here are six big 2016 trends to keep you on the cutting edge.

BOLD STRIPES

Kate Spade New York Stripe Sequin Top ($428). Stripes are a perennial fashion trend, but the dainty Breton stripes from 2015 are being usurped by wider, more colorful stripes this year. This structured top has a classic T-shirt shape, dressed up by thousands of sequins for a look that is versatile and eye catching.

RUFFLES

CeCe By Cynthia Kate Ruffle Hem Shift Dress ($138 at Nordstrom). From bold, all-over flamenco ruffles to subtle flair at the hem, ruffles are a designer favorite for 2016. Soft ruffles on the sleeve and at the hemline of this shift dress, available in blue, green or black, transform it into a special piece.

STATEMENT JEWELRY

Bainbridge Layer Necklace ($64 at Anthropologie). Statement necklaces are back, thanks to their ability to transform a basic look into one with “wow.” This necklace uses a harmonious mix of textures and colors to create a piece with pop.

NEAT PLEATS

Loft Pleated Flippy Dress ($79.50 at loft.com). Adding a little prep to our step in 2016 are dainty knife pleats on skirts and dresses. A flattering drop waist and long sleeves make this dress a three-season standout.

MARLED KNITS

Hinge Marled Long Open Front Cardigan ($88 at Nordstrom). Designers Jason Wu and Michael Kors featured marled knits in their 2016 collections. This cardigan is available in four neutral colors to layer over any cold-weather outfit.

MOODY FLORALS

Needle & Thread Floral Frill Maxi Dress ($649 at shopbop.com). Floral patterns will be less soft and more moody this year. Look for them mixed with lace on dark backgrounds, like on this formal-occasion maxi.
