Stripes, bold colors and eclectic prints are making this summer's styles for men and women particularly exciting.
Even as some trends surface consistently every summer (we’re looking at you, florals), this season is awash in some particularly exciting styles.
Super-bright colors, eclectic mix-and-match looks, and statement stripes are all worth exploring as you add a few new pieces to your wardrobe for summer. Here are fun picks in each category.
Stripes never (seriously, never) go out of style. But while stripes in general are a perennial favorite, this summer’s incarnation is bolder and more show-stopping, adding some punch to your wardrobe.
Tomorrowland’s Striped Cotton-Blend Pencil Skirt ($320 at Barneys New York, downtown) is an eye-catching investment piece in a flattering ribbed knit with contrasting stripes.
Vibrant painterly stripes make the Maggy London Off the Shoulder Sheath Dress ($118 at Nordstrom) a playful option for a casual wedding or a night out.
Thick color-block-style stripes and an understated washed-out color palette make the American Rag Men’s Colorblocked T-Shirt ($13 at Macy’s) totally wearable for day or night.
Get multiple looks out of Splendid’s Capistan Rugby Stripe Dress (on sale for $111 at Splendid), which works as a classic shirtdress, an airy tunic over skinny jeans, or open as a vest.
Take your stripes to the pool with Solid and Striped’s Elle Striped Bikini ($176 at net-a-porter.com), a sporty bikini in three gorgeous color combos.
Forget pastels. This season’s color story is all about super bright, vibrant, saturated colors that demand attention.
Old Navy’s Slim Built-In Flex Ultimate Khaki Shorts (on sale for $24), in gorgeous bright blue, play nicely with neutrals or — even better — other bright colors.
Think pink with the oh-so-pretty J.Crew Peplum Lady Jacket in Neon Fuchsia Tweed (on sale for $100) in a lightweight, summer-appropriate tweed with a feminine peplum ruffle. Want to really go for it? Spring for the matching Pencil Skirt ($98, both at jcrew.com) and mix, match or wear them together.
In possibly the hottest color of the season — a gorgeous marigold yellow — Maeve’s Gardenia Lace Column Dress ($168 at Anthropologie) can be dressed up or down for any of your big summer events.
Guys can get in on this summer’s love of yellow, as well. Polo Ralph Lauren’s Hawaiian Swim Boxer in Yellow ($60 at Macy’s) is pure, unadulterated sunshine.
White jeans have become a summer staple for women, and now it’s the guys’ turn. R13’s Boy Jeans in Warren White ($345 at Baby & Co., Belltown) feature a modern fit — low cut with a relaxed thigh and a tapered leg — and masculine gunmetal hardware.
If you’ve ever wanted to add eclectic styles — whimsical prints, mix-and-match everything, retro looks — to your wardrobe, now is the time.
Fellas with a sense of adventure will flip for Seattle-based Tommy Bahama’s Naples Florida Seas 6-Inch Swim Trunks ($68 at Tommy Bahama). The throwback postcard print is fun, and the shorter trunk length is right on-trend for summer.
Skinny jeans? Not this season. Of-the-moment denim is quirky, cropped, flared — or all three. We’re swooning over the fit, cut and vintage detailing of AMO’s Saily Ultra High-Rise Cropped Boot Jeans (on sale for $208 at Anthropologie).
Keep it cool in an off-the-shoulder top such as Pipe and Row Staples’ Lily Tassel Top ($55 at Pipe and Row, Fremont), a super-fun piece with a show-stopping lemon print and breezy tassel detailing.
The precious floral print featured on Rachel Roy’s Greenhouse Strappy Halter One Piece Swimsuit ($116 at Macy’s) is a sweet throwback to the ’90s, while the plunging neckline and side-strap detailing land this suit squarely in the summer of 2017.
Mix it up with the whimsical prints featured on the Old Navy Regular-Fit Soft-Washed Classic Shirt for Men (on sale for $15–$20), a short-sleeved summer staple that comes covered in waves, sharks, sail boats or a completely awesome boardwalk print complete with Ferris wheels and palm trees.
