What do you do? I am the director and owner of GALLERY 1/1 in Ballard. We are currently the only gallery in the U.S. that specializes exclusively in unique photographic prints. I represent artists who are using alternative, experimental and historic photography processes to make prints that are generally not reproducible in multiple editions.

How did you get started in that field? Since I am also an artist and art collector, I have been watching how photographic artists are responding to the huge impact digital technology has had on their world. Many of them are revisiting analog techniques with a more contemporary approach and making very exciting photographs. I wanted to help get their artistic visions seen by wider audiences.

What’s a typical day like? My days vary depending on whether we are getting ready to open new exhibit, prep for a special event like the Ballard Art Walk or managing all the logistics to show at a major art fair like [this week’s] The Photography Show in New York City. However, social media is a daily constant, especially Instagram, where we regularly share behind-the-scenes gallery info and hunt for new amazing artists to present to the Seattle art world.

What surprises people about what you do? We now live in an image-saturated, virtual world where everyone is a photographer to some degree. But swiping though a thousand images on your phone dose not compare to holding a handmade photograph print. The idea that young artists still work in darkrooms and make photographic prints seems to surprise a lot of people.

What’s the best part of the work? Our gallery has been the first Seattle exhibition for almost all of the artist we have shown. I am thrilled to be introducing to the city emerging artists whose work really benefits by being seen in person. It really makes my day when someone comes in to the gallery and is wowed by the craftsmanship and authenticity of the prints.
