Dealership staff in disbelief.

Some shops offer 10-minute oil changes. That would have been about seven minutes too long for a woman who gave birth while getting an oil change this week near Pittsburgh.

Amanda Sherman, 24, gave birth to 7-pound, 12-ounce Heather Lynn when she went to the restroom Monday at a Nissan dealership. She texted her husband Adam, who rushed in and called 911. A few minutes later he was tying off the umbilical cord with a lace from his boot.

A registered nurse, who was another customer, assisted.

Brett Lewis, the shop’s general manager, said he didn’t believe an employee who told him about the birth until the ambulance arrived.

The Seattle Times learned Friday that the Nissan dealership happily picked up the tab for the Shermans’ oil change.
