Mary K. Letourneau, the former elementary-school teacher who served prison time after raping one of her students, was arrested Monday on a misdemeanor warrant.

Letourneau, 51, was arrested by Tukwila police and booked into jail at 4:44 a.m. She was wanted for driving without a license, authorities said.

On Jan. 4, 2013, a Washington State Patrol trooper pulled over Letourneau for having expired tabs, King County prosecutors said.

The trooper found that she had a suspended license, due to unpaid traffic infractions. Her vehicle registration was also expired and she had no proof of insurance, prosecutors said.

Letourneau was cited and released.

In September, when she failed to show up at a court hearing in connection with the case, King County District Court Judge Victoria Seitz issued an arrest warrant for third-degree driving with a suspended license.

It’s unclear why Letourneau was stopped by Tukwila police on Monday.

Letourneau is expected to have a bail hearing at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent on Tuesday afternoon, prosecutors said.

Letourneau and Vili Fualaau, now 30, first met when he was in the second grade at Burien’s Shorewood Elementary School and she was a married mother of four. Their relationship became sexual when he was 12.

Letourneau was pregnant with Fualaau’s first child when she was arrested in 1997. She pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree child rape and was sentenced to 7½ years in prison, with all but six months suspended.

But a month after her conditional release, she was caught having sex with Fualaau again and was sent to prison, where she bore their second daughter.

The headline-making couple married on May 2005, the nuptials captured by TV.

The couple capitalized on their notoriety by co-hosting “Hot for Teacher” nights at a Pioneer Square nightclub.
