The Humane Society for Seattle/King County has provided tips for pet owners.
• Don’t leave pets unattended in your car, even for a few minutes. Even if you crack the windows, it isn’t enough to protect your pet.
• Pugs, bulldogs, Persian cats and pets with short noses are more susceptible to heatstroke because their flat faces make breathing more difficult.
• Know heatstroke signs: heavy panting, agitation, glazed eyes, vomiting and a deep red- or purple- colored tongue. If your pet becomes overheated apply ice packs or cold towels to your pet’s head, neck and chest and head to your veterinarian immediately.
