You’ll never look at the natural world growing up around us in quite the same way after reading this book. I’m not guaranteeing your mouth will start watering at the sight of nettles or bittercress (which author Doug Benoliel calls a “tasty jewel”), but you may well learn, with the help of Benoliel’s drawings and clear descriptions, how to identify which plants are poisonous and which are safe to eat. As well as which are the most nutritious, and which parts to eat fresh or dry.
Botanist and wild plant enthusiast Doug Benoliel’s first edition of Northwest Foraging was published in 1974. He recently expanded and revised his classic guide, published by Skipstone Press, an imprint of Mountaineer Books (2011, $16.95).
I have to admit I’m more interested in the lore of these humble plants, and their natural history than in eating them…
