In the Garden
Harvest fairs offer you an opportunity to learn, taste delicious food and take part in fun activities for all ages. Here are some coming up:
The Seattle Tilth Harvest Fair: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 7, Meridian Park, behind the Good Shepherd Center, 4649 Sunnyside Ave. N. Workshops, cooking demonstrations, vendors selling plants, crafts and food. Local organic farms will offer tastings and sell produce. There will even be a parade with a marching band. In addition, you can visit the famous Tilth Garden and talk to experts from the garden hotline (206-633-0451 or seattletilth.org).
The King County Master Gardener Harvest Fair: 10 a.m.-noon Sept. 14 at the Lake Hills Greenbelt Urban Demonstration Garden, 15500 S.E. 16th St. in Bellevue. According to tomato expert Wally Prestbo, this is the best tomato year since he became a Master Gardener 17 years ago. The Master Gardeners are celebrating the abundant harvest with a huge tomato tasting. In addition, there will be a potato-digging contest, dried-flower arranging classes and more. Master Gardeners will be on hand to talk about the best varieties of vegetables to grow in our climate and to answer garden questions (www.mgfkc.org).
