This week’s offering is a Taco Tuesday twofer: Elysian Fields in Pioneer Square and Tailgaters Sports Bar in Ballard.
We go retro in honor of that tradition, revered by starving grad students and bar hoppers everywhere.
Elysian in Pioneer Square (not its more popular brew pub on Capitol Hill) is where you want to be on Tuesdays. Tacos are $1.50, with your choice of beef, chicken and, in an homage to Mexican taco trucks, beef tongue, chorizo and al pastor. The last is a spicy pork topped with grilled pineapple. Squeeze a bit of lime wedge on that smoky beef. Wash it all down with a malty Loki lager. Its free salsa buffet will come in handy when you run into the dry, shredded chicken taco.
Better tacos can be had in this city during happy hour than here, but not for under two bucks. And it doesn’t end with tacos at Elysian. Moist, spicy pork tamales ($1.50 each) and other Tex-Mex grub like a trio of taquitos with guacamole and ceviche all go for around $4 or less on Tuesdays.

That’s a lot of food for under $20.
But apparently you can go even cheaper. In Ballard, the new sports bar Tailgaters boasts an all-you-can-eat- taco buffet for $7.50 or, if you can wolf down only a couple, $1 per taco.
It’s as old school as you can get: hard taco shells with ground beef like your school cafeteria days, with the usual fixings of sour cream, shredded lettuce, cheese, jalapeños and salsa. It’s a beer sponge, for sure. Wash it down with $3 happy-hour pints of Double Barrel Ale from Firestone Walker Brewing Co.
All-you-can-eat buffet means you’ll be around for a while, so grab a good seat so you won’t have to strain your neck catching the game on the 10 flat screens that festoon the bar.
Elysian Fields, 542 First Ave S., offers Taco Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. or until the last taco is gone. Chances there will be any tacos left after 6 p.m. are slim on Mariners game night (206-382-4498 or www.elysianbrewing.com).
Tailgaters Sports Bar, 5100 Ballard Ave. N.W., offers Taco Tuesday from 6 to 10 p.m. unless the taco buffet is demolished earlier (206-789-2000 or Facebook).
