National parks are waiving entrance fees Saturday through Monday, but there are good hiking trails even closer to home.
The Seattle-based Mountaineers, (www.mountaineers.org), which will host free hiking seminars on Nov. 15 and Dec. 13 at the Mountaineers Program Center, 7700 Sand Point Way N.E., Seattle, offers some options:
Wallace Falls State Park: About 45 minutes from Seattle, it features nine waterfalls in less than three miles and a 1,200-foot altitude gain. Go past Monroe onto U.S. Highway 2 and continue to Gold Bar. Turn left onto First Street and go four-tenths of a mile to a four-way stop. Turn right onto May Creek Road and go 1.5 more miles to the trailhead.
