The little dogs will be strutting at a chihuahua fest and a wiener dog race this weekend, but they won't be the only ones having a good time.
This month there’s a walk to benefit old dogs, a chicken class, a pet festival, a canine boat cruise and adoption events for cats, lots of cats.
We’ll start this list of events with a reminder about Purrfect Pals’ monthlong “Vintage Cat Special.”
Vintage Cat Special: Through July 31, several locations including Purrfect Pals shelter, 230 McRae Road N.E., Arlington. Purrfect Pals is reducing its adoption fee for cats seven years or older. The reduced fee is $50 for a single cat. Bonded pairs of “vintage” cats can be adopted for $75. That’s half the usual fee. The cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, tested for feline leukemia and have microchip IDs.

Chihuahua Festival: 10 a.m. July 21, Mount Vernon Christian School, 820 Blackburn Road, Mount Vernon. Chihuahua Rescue and Referral fundraising event includes vendors, contests, an auction and adoptable dogs. $5 admission.
Kent & Alan Wiener Dog Races: Wiener dog racing is expected to start at about 3:30 p.m. July 21, Emerald Downs, Auburn. The qualifying heats will be between horse races followed by a championship race. (Horses start at 2:15 p.m.) This is the 16th annual dachshund run presented by Star 101.5. Only dogs that pre-qualified for the races and service animals are allowed into the Emerald Downs facility.
$50 Kittens: July 21-22, Seattle Humane Society, 13212 S.E. Eastgate Way, Bellevue. Bring home a kitten for just $50 (normally $125 for kittens under 6 months) or double your fun and adopt two kittens for $90 (normally $200) this weekend only. Seattle Humane’s hours are 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sunday.
Walk for Old Dogs: Noon-3 p.m. July 22, Bellevue Downtown Park, Bellevue. Celebrate our old canine friends with a relaxed, half-mile stroll around the park’s water feature. For those prefering a shorter walk or needing breaks, there are benches along the way and paths leading to the grass area. Bring your own drinking water. $25 registration fee. Wild Wags Dog Fest: Noon-3 p.m. July 22, K9 Korral, 9612 115th Ave. N.E., Lake Stevens. Adoption event features spayed/neutered dogs and puppies from six shelters and rescue organizations. People and Pets Blood Drive: 1-3:30 p.m. July 26, ACCESS Renton, 4208 Lind Ave. S.W., Renton. ACCESS (Animal Critical Care and Emergency Services) is teaming up with Puget Sound Blood Center in this blood drive for cats, dogs and their owners. Donor cats must be 1 to 6 years old and weigh at least 10 pounds. Dogs must be the same age but are required to weigh at least 50 pounds. City Chickens 101: 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. July 28, Seattle Tilth Association, 4649 Sunnyside Avenue North, Room 1, Seattle. Learn how to care for hens in the city. $30-$40.
Go Dog, Go! Kirkland Canine Festival & Dog Walk: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. July 28, Juanita Beach Park, Kirkland. The 2-mile dog walk starts at 10:30 a.m. ($20/family). The free festival includes exhibitors, food booths, demonstrations of dog sports, music, contests and other entertainment.
Dog Day on Elliott Bay: 11 a.m.-5:45 p.m. July 29, Argosy Cruises, Pier 55, Seattle. Take a boat cruise to Blake Island with your favorite canine friend to enjoy the beaches and trails. There’s a salmon bake at Tillicum Village for people. A special lunch for the dogs is slated to be provided by The Dining Dog Cafe & Bakery. $89 per adult. Dogs free. Meow in Mukilteo: Noon-3 p.m. July 29, Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave., Mukilteo. Pawsitive Alliance is hosting an adoption event with eight cat rescue groups.
