If you’re planning to take a pet to visit Santa, remember that dogs should be on leash, and cats and other creatures should be in carriers.

Home for the Holidays Pet Adoption Center: Dec. 1-23, Mill Creek Town Center, 15402 Main St., Mill Creek. The center opens Saturday with volunteers from the Community Cat Coalition and FurKidz 911 coordinating activities. Several nonprofit rescue organizations will be at the site with adoptable pets every Friday (4-8 p.m.), Saturday (10 a.m.-6 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m.-6 p.m.). Santa also will be visiting daily for photos with pets. Paddywack and Panos Properties are sponsoring the adoption center.

Pet Santa Photos: 1-5 p.m. Dec. 1, The Puppy Perfectors, 3730 S. Dawson St., Seattle. Girl Scout Rainbow Troop 52698 is coordinating pet photos with Santa to benefit The Doney Memorial Pet Clinic. $25 suggested donation. The clinic has been providing veterinary care and pet supplies to low-income and homeless pet owners for 25 years.

MEOW Cat Rescue Open House and Bazaar: 2-5 p.m., Dec. 1-2. MEOW Cat Rescue & Adoption hosts an open house at its shelter at 10600 N.E. 68th St., Kirkland. Just a few block away at 402 6th St. S., MEOW hosts a craft bazaar, bake sale and pet photos with Santa ($5). Canned and dry pet food donations will be collected.
Santa Pony Pictures: 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 1-2, All Breed Equine Rez-Q, 2415 116th St. N.E., Marysville. Sip hot cocoa or apple cider and get a photo taken with Santa Pony. Proceeds go toward the care of horses rescued from abuse and neglect. $15-$20.
Home for the Holidays: Dec. 7-9, Seattle Humane Society, 13212 S.E. Eastgate Way, Bellevue. The weekend of family-friendly activities includes caroling, photos with Santa and adoption specials. Kitten adoptions are $50 (or two for $90) Dec. 7-9 only. On Dec. 8 (11 a.m.-2 p.m.), bring your pet for a digital photo with Santa Paws. $20 suggested donation. Seattle Humane also will be accepting cat and dog food donations to help pets of low-income seniors and others. All month, adoption fees will be waived on cats one year and older and other small animals. Check the website for details.
Posing Pets with Santa: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Dec. 9, Kitsap Humane Society (training center), 9167 Dickey Road N.W., Silverdale. Get a printed photo of your pet and family with Santa. Photo packages start at $20. While at the shelter, visitors can check out the donation cards on the Tree Paws. The donations go toward caring for rescued animals.
Santa Paws: 2-4 p.m. Dec. 8 and 9, The Alexis Hotel, 1007 First Ave. Seattle: Seattle Animal Shelter Foundation’s annual holiday fundraiser offers a digital photo of pet with Santa. $15 donation.
Christmas Benefit: 5:30 Dec. 9, 7338 26th St. E., Fife. A family-friendly event featuring photos with Santa, tacky sweater and cutest pet contests, a silent auction and hot cocoa. This fundraiser, hosted by Paws-Abilities, benefits Sunny Sky’s Animal Rescue’s efforts to find a new home for the shelter.
Canine Christmas Extravaganza Adoption event: Noon-3 p.m. Dec. 16, Paws-Abilities Total Dog Center, 7338 26th Street E, Building F, Fife. Booths with food, crafts and pet supplies will open at 10 a.m. The adoption event starts at noon. Adoption fees: $100-$350. Fifteen shelter and rescue groups are slated to bring adoptable pets to the event. For a list of the groups, see the website.
Auburn Valley Humane Society Grand Opening Gala: 7-10 p.m. Dec. 28, Emerald Downs, 2300 Emerald Downs Drive, Auburn. Hors d’oeuvres, live music and silent auction. Tickets available until Dec. 17. $30. Email info@auburnvalleyhs. The shelter’s official opening is scheduled for Jan. 1, 2013.
Home for the Holidays: Through Dec. 30, PAWS, 15305 44th Ave. W., Lynnwood, and PAWS Cat City, 5200 Roosevelt Way NE, Suite B, Seattle. Adoption fees are being reduced to $75 for adult pets and $50 for senior pets.
