With all due respect to pumpkins, when the Indian corn arrives, so has fall.
For us, Indian corn brings thoughts of the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving, harvest moons and warm, rich colors. What a great time of year!
Shari was browsing around the store’s produce department and came across mini-ears of Indian corn. They were three for a couple of dollars, so she bought 30 of them and decided to figure out how to make an Indian-corn wreath.
She cut a piece of foam core in a doughnut shape for the base, wrapped it with burlap and hot-glued the Indian corn to the foam. It worked out great.

30 or so mini-ears of Indian corn
Foam core, 13 by 13 inches
Burlap, ½ yard
Start by arranging the Indian corn in a circle, using as many ears as you like. Shari used 27. Then get out the ruler to figure out what size your foam-core wreath needs to be. Shari’s needed to be 13 inches in diameter, with a 6-inch circle cut out of the center.
Cut out the foam-core wreath. Then cut about a dozen 1-inch strips of burlap across the width of the fabric. Make sure to leave at least 3 to 4 inches of burlap for a ribbon to hang your wreath.
Using the hot-glue gun, glue the end of a strip of burlap to the back of the foam core and start wrapping the burlap around and around.
When you get to the end of a strip, hot-glue it in place and start a new strip. Keep wrapping until the entire foam core is covered.
Arrange the ears of Indian corn in the order you would like, making sure the colors are separated in a pleasing fashion. Make sure to note where you want the top and the bottom to be. Then, begin hot-gluing the ears to the foam-core wreath from the bottom up.
As you approach the top, stop gluing and cut a piece of burlap for hanging the wreath; this piece should be about 2½ to 3 inches wide. You can remove several of the threads along the edges to fringe it a bit if you like, then place it at the very top of your wreath and hold it in place with a few beads of hot glue.
Add the final ears of Indian corn and then find a prominent place in your home to hang your pretty seasonal wreath.
