Pilates, with its emphasis on precise movements, can seem like it is reserved for the super-fit, but it has shown resilience in the everyday fitness world. The movements can help anyone improve flexibility and strength, as well as concentration and body awareness.
There are a number of studios around the region that offer introductions. Heather Scearce, owner of Conscious Body Pilates in the Madrona neighborhood, is leading free 30-minute sessions through September to expose more seniors to the discipline. That includes learning principles of posture and spine alignment, and some home exercise suggestions.
“Pilates is so great for them because we focus on posture, balance and stretching their tight muscles — they enjoy the stretching because of all the sitting they do,” says Scearce, who began working with seniors at an Aegis Living facility.
