The Elliott Bay Pizza Company on Queen Anne Hill bills itself as a pizza establishment, but the huge sub sandwiches are the big draw.

The menu boasts 26 different subs made with fresh bread baked on-site. That first bite of the crunchy surface gives way to an incredibly soft center.

The subs come in 6- or 12-inch sizes, and the larger ones — split into quarters — can feed two people and leave them satisfyingly stuffed.

All the subs are jammed with a variety of meats sliced in-house, cheeses and vegetable toppings. The Hot & Spicy — with Italian sausage, marinara sauce, red onions, green peppers and mozzarella — is one of my newfound favorites.

There are 23 varieties of pizza, or you can build your own. The marinara sauce has just the right ingredients, and the crust was crispy. While it’s not the best pizza in town, my kids enjoyed it.

Those who want to dine and dash can grab ready-made pizza by the slice: $1.95 for cheese and $2.45 for a combo.

There also are some vegetarian subs, pizzas and burgers.

The menu: Sub sandwiches ($4.50-$10.95) and pizzas ($7.95-$21.95), along with calzones ($9.95), burgers ($4.95-$6.45), gyros ($5.95-$6.45), barbecue sandwiches ($8.95) and half- or full-size salads ($3.95-$7.50).

Side items include breadsticks ($2.50-$6.95), cheese bread ($2.25-$4.50), French fries ($1.75-$2.65) and onion rings ($2.95). The chicken tenders, fries and onion rings came out of a bag from the freezer, but they were fried to crisp perfection.

What to write home about: We fell in love with the Italian Sub ($5.95 for a 6-inch and $10.95 for a footlong), which came with wine-cured salami, Canadian bacon, pepperoni, provolone, red onions, mayo, mustard, lettuce and tomatoes slathered with Italian dressing.

The setting: Order at the front counter, then seat yourself at one of the eight tables.

Summing up: Four of us had an Italian footlong sub ($10.95), small cheese pizza ($6.95), Hot & Spicy footlong sub ($9.95), four-piece chicken tenders and fries ($8.95) and onion rings ($2.95) for $43.73 with tax.
