Seattle Beer Week started Thursday, May 9, but if you missed the kick-off, never fear, there are more than 200 beer tastings and food-pairing events to stumble to over the next 10 days.
That’s right, a 10-day “week.” If the guys behind Seattle Beer Week were in charge of the calendar, the Easter bunny might still be running around. We might be lighting candles on the 12th day of Hanukkah.
“We like to call it a brewer’s week because it takes brewers a few more days to get things done,” said Ian Roberts, one of the organizers of the sudsy extravaganza.
We’re not complaining, of course.

Quietly, beer week has become one of the biggest food events in Seattle, with brewers flying in from around the world, bar owners popping rare beers for the occasion and restaurants holding beer-pairing dinners. This year, many Tom Douglas restaurants host several events.
Roberts, co-owner of the Capitol Hill craft-beer bar Pine Box, and his beer buddies Matt Younts and Mike Baker, got the idea six years ago after hitting the famous Great American Beer Festival in Colorado. You could hear revelers shouting “Denver representing” or “Michigan’s in the house!”
What the trio never heard were shout-outs to Seattle. So, this beer bash was started five years ago to raise the profile of this city’s beer scene, they said.
Seattle Beer Week is a loose definition. It’s not all about the local craft-beer movement, a point of contention with many local brewers. Some restaurants and bars feature food pairings with Belgian ales or showcase out-of-state brands such as the acclaimed Dogfish Head Brewery in Delaware.

Friday, 5-8 p.m., Hotel Andra
Think of it as a Tom Douglas pub crawl, where you stroll from Dahlia Lounge to Etta’s with nibbles to go with beers from Elysian Brewing Co. and New Belgium Brewing Co. in Colorado. Elysian brewer Dick Cantwell and New Belgium Brewing Co. owner Kim Jordan lead the pub-crawl. $50 includes six beers and snacks at six stops. Tickets available at www.tomdouglas.com
Friday, 6-9 p.m., Naked City Taphouse
This Greenwood bar hosts a dozen garage-size and other nano breweries in the Seattle area, beers you won’t find in your favorite watering hole or grocery store. www.nakedcitybrewing.com/
Sunday, 2-5 p.m., Wine World and Spirits
The Wallingford store hosts the second annual “Sip & Slurp: Beer and Oyster Pairing Competition.” About 10 local breweries will pair oysters from Taylor Shellfish, with a friendly wager for charity for best pairing. Monday, all day, Beveridge Place Pub in West Seattle
For those purists who complain Seattle Beer Week is infested with too many out-of-town breweries and big company sponsors, this event is for you. It’s titled “This is Washington Dammit!” — 36 beers from 36 Washington state breweries. $3 a pint. www.beveridgeplacepub.com/
Tuesday, 4-11 p.m., Urban Family Public House
Ballard has become the hip ’hood for brewery startups. If you don’t want to drive around to find all of them, then just hit this brewpub, which will feature suds from nine Ballard breweries. www.urbanfamilypublichouse.com/
Tuesday, 6:30-10 p.m., Quinn’s
So the much sought-after Hair of the Dog Brewing pairing dinner at Pine Box sold out within four hours. All is not lost. The great gastropub Quinn’s on Capitol Hill hosts a six-course dinner paired with seven Trappist beers. $130 per person (plus tax and tip) and take-home gifts. Call for reservations, 206 325-7711.
May 16, all day, Brouwer’s Cafe
The world’s best sour beers get tapped at this Fremont beer mecca’s Sour Fest. The 53 sour beers will be about $7 to $8 for 12-oz. pours.
May 16, 6-10 p.m., Pine Box
Nine taps of the stellar Evil Twin Brewery in Denmark will be featured. Its brewer Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø will be on hand. It’s also a great excuse to stop by this Capitol Hill pub to sample the great new food menu from James Beard award-winning chef Scott Carsberg.
May 17, 7-11 p.m., The Burgundian
This North Seattle bar offers food pairing with the local cult favorite Black Raven Brewing from Redmond and also Midnight Sun Brewing from Alaska. Black Raven will feature a few beers, including a special Kriek on tap. The two breweries also did a collaborative beer, a bourbon barrel coconut porter.
May 19, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., The Dray
Traditionally one of the biggest parties to close out beer week, the fifth annual “Parking Lot Party” at this great soccer bar in Ballard will feature some rare kegs the pub owners save every year for the occasion. (Last year, they had a lot of kegs from Russian River Brewing.) Tacos and barbecue will be served. www.thedray.com
