For the sweet tooth, Bakery Nouveau is a better reason to hit West Seattle than Alki Beach. Capitol Hill folks who dream of its famed Twice Baked Almond Croissant on Sundays don’t have to drive that far. The popular bakery has opened a second location off 15th Avenue East.

The menu: It’s one of the more ambitious bakeries in Seattle, offering a wide range of pastries, bread, chocolates, sandwiches and pizzas. It’s been making inroads into the lunch crowd, pushing pizzas and pastries stuffed and dressed up in many savory variations.

What to write home about: The Twice Baked Almond Croissant, soaked in syrup and filled with almond cream and topped with more almonds and cream, remains the most sought-after item. If there’s any left over at home, just add a scoop of vanilla ice cream like folks do in Tampa, Fla.

The thick pizza is a cross between an open-faced focaccia sandwich and a Chicago deep dish, with meaty fillings over a thick bed of cheese, cut with a tangy tomato sauce, a hearty slice. Request that pizza heated up.

The sandwich lineup varies, but a consistent winner is the roast pork with pickled onions, peppery arugula and a smear of a tuna-saladlike spread for a creamy, acidic bite. The quiche is textbook perfect — silky in texture and not overwhelmed with meat-and-veggie fillings.

What to skip: The thicket of caramelized onions just overwhelmed the roast-beef brioche and the tuna-salad croissant was too salty, and after a while, soggy.

The setting: The selections are displayed in cases by category: chocolate, cakes, pastries, sandwiches and a savory selection of pizza and quiches. It’s not the most comfortable setting to dine in, due to the crowd and the limited seating (only five tables and about 20 seats). Don’t be shy. If there’s a couple of open seats, ask to share or you might be standing a while.

Summing up: Four sandwiches, a quiche ($4.50), pastry ($4.50) and a blueberry macaroon ($1.50) totaled $43.61, enough to feed four to five. Known more for its pastries, Bakery Nouveau is an underrated lunch stop. Sandwich prices are comparable to those of other lunch haunts.
