Misoya takes an innovative spin on traditional sushi rolls.
Sometimes your eyes can deceive you.
And a creative chef — like the sushi chef at Misoya, a small Japanese restaurant in Lynnwood — can be very good at faking you out.
One example of Misoya’s creativity is their “stuffed orange” ($6.50). It has a clever name but is a pleasant surprise when you bite into it. It’s really slices of fresh salmon, instead of oranges, stuffed with steamed rice and topped with a seasoned avocado purée.
With so many sushi restaurants in the Seattle area, it’s easy to overlook some of the smaller, hidden ones. But once you find Misoya, your eyes will be pleased with the creative tricks.

The menu: A wide variety of Asian-inspired food. From sushi rolls and sashimi to teriyaki and noodle dishes. There is even a kids section with smaller portions.
What to write home about: At first glance, the Yummy Yummy Roll ($9.50) looks like a plate of crostini with bruschetta on top. But replace the bread with a tuna roll fried in tempura batter and the tomatoes with red spicy tuna on top with an eel sauce, and you have this creative dish.
The Sunshine Roll ($9.50) is a traditional California roll laid out on a plate with a heaping amount of tuna, salmon and red snapper mixed in a spicy sauce on top.
The setting: Hidden in a strip mall not far from the Alderwood mall, it can be easily missed if you don’t look closely. But once you get inside, you’ll find a nice, quiet place filled with tables, booths and a sushi bar up front, where you can watch the chef perform his masterpieces.
Summing up: Three sushi rolls and a Bento Box ($9.50) came out to $42 plus tip. Meals include a cup of miso soup and a salad.
