Happy Hour: For 25 years, the Latona Pub in Seattle, near Green Lake, has provided a venue for the craft-beer movement.
As barhopping destinations go, Latona Pub isn’t a blip on the radar for many, but it stands as one of the most important bars during the infancy of the craft-beer movement. The pub was the first to put a then-obscure pale ale called Manny’s on tap, among other beers. It gave many startup breweries a venue to introduce their IPAs.
For 25 years it’s been doing this. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the neighborhood pub is throwing a bash Saturday night with specialty beers brewed just for the occasion. The cult Black Raven Brewing Co. in Redmond made a peppercorn beer. Anacortes Brewing made a rye IPA. Ribs will be sizzling on the grill. Many brewers around the state and beer geeks will be on hand.
But you should really come here on Fridays during happy hour. The jazz is stellar, featuring the talented bassist Phil Sparks. It’s one of the city’s best-kept secrets for free live music during happy hour and a Friday tradition of this corner pub.
Located at Latona Avenue Northeast and Northeast 65th Street near Green Lake, Latona Pub was once a rundown tavern. Then Bob Brenlin and his business partners bought the place, cleaned it up and reopened it in 1987.

Pints cost about $3.75 during happy hour. Pub grub comes in huge portions. The popular meatloaf is the size of a sirloin steak. The best was the grass-fed burger, nicely charred and juicy, with a spread of mayo with mild heat. The salads are really dinner entrees. One — a leg-of-duck confit over a mound of greens with sweet, caramelized pecans, roasted beets and a thick slice of Humboldt Fog chevre with a side of baguette — was a bit heavy-handed on the cranberry-fig dressing. But you will be full.
