For years, The Alibi Room was the cool haunt for artists and freelance writers. I remember it more as the TMZ for restaurant gossips. Bartenders and prep cooks love to cozy up to the bar before or after work and let off steam. And boy did they let off steam. Bad tippers and Groupon users, you should hear what they say about you.
Now, The Alibi Room has opened a second branch in Greenwood, offering the same perks that tend to draw restaurant-industry folks — not to mention people with scant daytime obligations (read: a job). There’s happy hour from noon to 6 p.m., pizza orders taken until 1 a.m. and $8 cocktails.
The original Alibi sits next to the popular Gum Wall at Pike Place Market, but few tourists venture in. It’s a hideaway for downtown dwellers who want no part of the tourists hovering around the fish flingers.
Greenwood’s Alibi Room has a polite, neighborhood feel and not the insider vibe of the Post Alley location. It’s less cliquish. It lacks the late-night characters and the snarky remarks, which is, depending on one’s perspective, part of the charm of the original Alibi — or the bane of it.

But in Greenwood, there’s the bonus of a late-night happy hour and more beers on tap. You have lots of excuses to hang out at this Alibi as well.
Six years ago, the original location, under new ownership, streamlined its menu. Pizza became the focus — thin crust with endless toppings and sauces to choose from. And the same is true at the new spot. While it won’t make anyone’s top-five list, it’s a respectable pie and one of the better pizza deals in Seattle, a favorite of many starving artists. A pie and pint of craft beer with cost you about $10 during happy hour.
Of course, there’s pepperoni and other topping staples. But you can do better — a pie topped with generous chunks of Uli’s Cajun andouille sausage with pickled peppers and roasted red peppers for a sweet, tangy bite to wash down with a Manny’s.
There’s some serviceable bruschetta and roasted garlic to spread over the focaccia, though, inexcusably, the cook forgot the cheese in the mac-and-cheese on a recent visit.
