A drop-by neighborhood pub should be cozy, inviting and friendly — with good food certainly a big plus. The Pub at Third Place in Ravenna has all of that, and a unique ambience to boot. Nestled under Third Place Books and Vios Café, this wood-paneled Hobbit house of a hang-out serves wine, beer and some delicious edibles, whisked to you from the Vios kitchen upstairs.

You don’t get giant portions here, but the fare is fresh, well-prepared and filling. And the woodsy environment, whether you’re chatting with friends or tapping on your laptop, warms a cold winter’s night.

The menu: Hearty sandwiches and burgers, daily soups, salads as well as Greek dishes from the regular upstairs Vios menu are offered. There’s a good-deal happy hour with a more limited menu, every day from 3 to 5 p.m.

What to write home about: Carnivores can dig into the messy but delectable tomato- sauced-slathered lamb meatball sandwich ($12.50). Other delicious sammies (all served on hearty, crusty bread with tasty French fries, or dressed greens) include a zesty picante pulled pork with harissa aioli, Greek yogurt cabbage slaw and pickled jalapeños ($12.50); and, for a meatless treat, there’s eggplant with roasted red pepper relish, basil and grilled, salty Haloumi cheese ($12). If you want to go Greek, try the trio sampler of luscious hummus and other classic dips with pita ($14), or order one dip ($5.50). And if you just want a munch with that beer, the black truffle-buttered popcorn ($3) is glorious.

The setting: Snug but not cramped, welcoming and well-lit, with bar seating, tables and casual but helpful servers. There’s a small library of books to thumb through, and some board games to play.

Summing up: A meatball sandwich, an eggplant sandwich and an order of truffle popcorn came to $27.50, before drinks, tax and tip, and it well satisfied two diners.
