Because even the most saintly couples may need a couple of hours away from the kids or in-laws, we present 15 bars open on Christmas Day. (The list works just as well if you’re a Festivus kind of guy.)

Zig Zag Cafe, 1501 Western Ave., has become a Christmas tradition for many Seattleites, with folks coming for that martini after their feast in Chinatown or a movie. It’s also the go-to place for hotel employees, line cooks and industry folks after their late-night holiday shift.

Sun Liquor, 607 Summit Ave. E., has the eggnog market cornered early in the evening. Its aged eggnog has sold out the past two Christmases. Try Sun Liquor Distillery, 514 E. Pike St., where there’s no line after the doors open at 7 p.m.

Liberty, 517 15th Ave. E., will serve tequila-sherry eggnog, the trendy holiday drink around the Northwest this year. It’s a light, nutty concoction made famous by Jeffrey Morgenthaler, bartender at Clyde Common in Portland.

Montana, 1506 E. Olive Way, will serve holiday-themed cocktails, as well as a ginger hot toddy. Opens at 7 p.m.

The Hideout, 1005 Boren Ave., a charming, artsy bar, opens at 6 p.m. and serves hot buttered rum.

Canon, 928 12th Ave., the estimable cocktail den on the trendy strip on Capitol Hill, opens at 7 p.m. You don’t want to miss that truffle old-fashioned.

Also: Tini Bigs, 100 Denny Way in Lower Queen Anne, has always opened on Christmas Day, even before it was trendy.

In Belltown, an underrated new bar, Rocco’s, 2228 Second Ave., has a stellar craft beer line up and cocktail menu. Doors open at 7 p.m. In Ballard, King’s Hardware bar, 5225 Ballard Ave., should draw many locals when doors open at 7 p.m.

For something romantic, hit Il Bistro, 93 Pike St., a dark, cozy little haunt. Those looking for a drink before a matinee should head downtown to Oliver’s Lounge, 405 Olive Way. Open at 11:30 a.m.

For an alternative to cocktails, hit Poco Wine Room, 1408 E. Pine St., which opens at 4 p.m.

The well-known soccer bar The George and Dragon Pub, 206 N. 36th St. in Fremont, opens at 6 p.m., and Linda’s Tavern, 707 E. Pine St., a Seattle institution, opens at 7 p.m.

Note: Most bars are understaffed on Christmas Day and may not offer a full menu.
