Who will take home the coveted 2013 Tony Awards for Broadway excellence on Sunday night? A few prognostications:
Best musical: “Matilda” is the season’s most imaginative show, and the deserved favorite, with “Kinky Boots” close by. The hit holiday run of “A Christmas Story” (developed at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre) and the short-lived “Bring It On” lag behind.
Best musical revival: The crowd-pleasing, circus-themed “Pippin” and beguiling “Mystery of Edwin Drood” are both worthy, but “Pippin” wins due to extra ingenuity and continuing sales clout.
“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike”
is Christopher Durang’s witty, warmly rueful modern spin on Chekhov’s plays, and should beat out Richard Greenberg’s “The Assembled Parties.” (Affection for the late Nora Ephron could spur a dark-horse victory for her less-admired “Lucky Guy.”)

Expect the much-touted return of Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” to beat the touted Clifford Odets classic “Golden Boy” (staged by Tony nominee and ex-Intiman Theatre head Bartlett Sher).
Best lead actress in a play
: Cicely Tyson, shining at age 79 in a revival of “The Trip to Bountiful,” rules in a strong field shared by top-notch Amy Morton (“Virginia Woolf”) and Kristine Nielsen (“Vanya and Sonia”)
Best lead actress in a musical: Could Carolee Carmello take a Tony for the home team, as the magnetic star of the 5th Avenue Theatre-generated flop, “Scandalous!”? Unlikely. Patina Miller’s
fierce Leading Player in “Pippin” is favored.
Best lead actor in a play: While Nathan Lane is a marvel in “The Nance,” Oscar winner T
om Hanks, now packing ’em in for his Broadway debut as a controversial newspaper reporter in “Lucky Guy,” is considered all but unbeatable.
Best lead actor in a musical: Bertie Carvel is so utterly transformed and lip-smackingly evil as the demonic principal in “Matilda,” he triumphs — even over Billy Porter’s camp-tastic drag-diva turn in “Kinky Boots.”
