Tinariwen, a West African group that won a Grammy for its album "Tassili," plays Seattle's Showbox at the Market Tuesday, June 12.
Tinariwen, a collective of musicians from the southern Saharan desert, reinterpret traditional African melodies and rhythms on electric and acoustic guitars, overlaying them with poignant lyrics telling the story of the oppression of their people, the nomadic Touareg. The group won a Grammy Award for its 2011 album “Tassili,” a stripped-down return to their acoustic roots recorded in the desert.
Tinariwen will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Showbox at the Market, 1426 First Ave., Seattle; $25 (888-929-7849 or www.showboxonline.com).
