The Golden Globes
Yes, of course, the Golden Globes are completely silly and frivolous and pointless. But that’s why they’re fun. And why should you watch this year, other than the hope of seeing Meryl Streep get tipsy and Daniel Day-Lewis give an acceptance speech in the voice of Lincoln? Five words: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. As hosts. (Wait, that’s seven.) I’ll be hosting a live Globes chat at seattletimes.com, starting at 4 p.m. Sunday; join me in assessing gowns, analyzing speeches, and cybergiggling. Pre-show 4 p.m., ceremony 5 p.m., Jan. 13 on NBC.

This impressively shot and scored low-budget movie by Seattle-based director-musician Jon Garcia concerns two Mormon missionaries running into trouble in Portland. The more they’re frustrated by their failure to win converts, the more they turn to each other for support — until “support” turns into something more … which really confuses things. Funny, smart and moving, the film, which played in the Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival stars Nick Ferrucci and some dazzlingly volatile turns by his co-star Benjamin Farmer. Now on DVD.

The silent behemoth Architeuthis is not just a legend anymore; the Internet went berserk as video was released recently of a 9-footer — filmed in its natural habitat for the first time — swimming deep under the sea off Japan’s Chichi Island. The footage is riveting, not only because it gives us a glimpse of something so rarely seen, but because it is stunning to look at; the shy monster is shiny and glowing and wondrous, not scaly and threatening and Jules Verne-ish. Not that I’d sign up for filming duty any time soon. See the video at hdsc.discovery.com.
