It’s time for holiday parties, on screen and off. Here are a few from the movies that I wish I’d been invited to …

‘The Fabulous Baker Boys’ (1989)

It’s a New Year’s Eve party at a fabulous hotel, and Michelle Pfeiffer’s writhing on the piano and singing “Makin’ Whoopee” to Jeff Bridges as he caresses the keys. How lucky were those guests? (And, remember that red dress? I do.)

‘The Thin Man’ (1934)

This week, save 90% on digital access.

Nick (William Powell) and Nora (Myrna Loy) throw a playful, boozy Christmas Eve party in their hotel suite (Nora, on the phone to room service: “Send me up a whole flock of sandwiches!”) — and a swell time was had by all.

‘Annie Hall’ (1977)

It’s a sort of Woody in Wonderland scene: New Yorkers Alvy (Woody Allen) and Annie (Diane Keaton) go to a Christmas party in Los Angeles, blinking in the bright sunshine. At the party, the talk is of meetings (“All the good meetings are taken”) and mantras (somebody forgot his). Merry Christmas to all!
