And here, for this summer’s day, is Kerry Washington in a pretty dress that just screams “summer garden party” in a good way. (It’s Dolce & Gabbana, and its wearer is, alas, not at a garden party but at the BET Awards in Los Angeles last weekend, sharing a microphone with Kevin Hart.) For those of us who mostly know Washington as Olivia Pope in “Scandal,” this is a welcome and almost unseemly riot of color; on the show, her character typically wears chic but stern separates — wide-legged pants, blazers, blouses — in shades of gray, white and navy. And, in the latest odd mingling of entertainment and fashion, Washington announced last week that she and “Scandal” costume designer Lyn Paolo have launched a clothing line, inspired by the show and available at The Limited starting Sept. 22. This means that all of us, if we wish, can dress like Olivia Pope, though white trenchcoats may not hold up well in the Seattle mud. I will admit to being strangely fascinated with the way that Olivia, when drinking wine alone at home at night and pondering deep thoughts, always wears beautiful, flowy pants and cardigans that coordinate perfectly with her apartment’s décor. Will the collection offer these as well? And will those who buy them need to redecorate?
