This week’s installment isn’t so much about fashion — though that skirt on the right is quite covetable — as about the power of costume. It’s quite likely that you know these three smiling ladies posing on a red carpet last week; they are (left to right) Sophie McShera, Lesley Nicol and Joanne Froggatt, better known as everyone’s favorite domestics on “Downton Abbey” — Daisy, Mrs. Patmore and Anna. On the show, their hair is up, their makeup is minimal and they’re swathed in the unadorned, voluminous uniforms of 1920s servants — it’s rare that we even see Mrs. Patmore bareheaded. Here, would you even recognize them? And did Sophie and Joanne playfully choose those bare-midriffs looks just to remind us that no, they’re not wearing corsets today? Hats off to them all; it’s nice to see them looking so cheery. Is it really going to be another seven months before we revisit Downton? And would someone on that show please get married next season? I need to see another 1920s wedding dress.
