Sixty years ago this weekend, Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” opened in theaters; an appropriate time to release a film that takes place over a series of hot summer evenings. Starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly, it’s a masterpiece of suspense, star chemistry — and costume design. The legendary Edith Head created just six outfits for Kelly to wear in the film, and each one is delicious; particularly this dinner dress (shown here on Kelly in a glamour shot) with its voluminous tulle skirt. When Kelly enters the room in this, topped off with a sheer tulle shawl like frosting on a dream cake, she seems to bring her own light. Each costume perfectly conveys the character of Lisa Fremont, a bright and beautiful socialite who notes that “If there’s one thing I know, it’s how to wear the proper clothes.” Indeed.
