Party like a pirate at the official kickoff of the Seafair season, the Seafair Pirates Landing, Saturday at Alki Beach. The stars of the day, the Seafair Pirates, sail in from the seven seas sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. (pirates can’t be tied down to a specific time, of course), with festivities starting at 9:30 a.m. including music and kids’ inflatable rides.
The beach will be filled with pirate wannabes of all ages since pirate attire is encouraged and pirate gear is available from event vendors. There’s an afternoon pirate-costume contest for kids, storytelling and visits from Seafair and West Seattle Hi-Yu princesses throughout the day.
The landing of the popular pirates, a local tradition since 1949, is expected to draw 15,000-plus fans and parking in the area is extremely limited. Get there by bike, bus or water taxi if you can, and allow plenty of time to find a place to park and walk to the event if you’re driving.
Other Seafair-affiliated community events this weekend include a sign-up party for the July 27 Seafair Torchlight Run 5K/8K from 4-8 p.m. Friday at F.X. McRory’s, Seattle, and the Wallingford Family Parade and Festival Saturday.

Tickets are available on Seafair’s website for its two signature events, the Torchlight Parade on July 27 and Seafair Weekend hydroplane races and air show Aug. 2, 3 and 4. Tickets are also available for Seafair Weekend, from general admission to a variety of special seating and other events, including the Backstage Air Show Experience at the Museum of Flight and Stan Sayres Pits on Aug. 3 and 4.
