Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside, ‘Untamed Beast’ (Partison Records)
“Untamed Beast” is a perfect title for Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside’s incendiary new album, the second full-length recording by the Portland, Ore., band led by one of the Rose City’s emerging rock ’n’ roll stars (she is a North Carolina native). Propelled by Ford’s powerfully throaty vocals and guitarist Jeffrey Munger’s twangy riffs, opening track “They Told Me” jumps through the speakers like a raging bull.
The entire album — the follow-up to 2011’s debut disc, “Dirty Radio” — sounds like a soundtrack for a life of mischief and misbehavior, with tunes that snort, sass and snarl: “Addicted,” “Bad Boys,” “Devil” and “Rockabilly.” Ford, Munger, bassist Tyler Tornfelt and drummer Ford Tennis blend blues and rockabilly with crazy abandon on just under a dozen tracks.
Ford’s feisty declarations about the opposite sex suggest that love has done her wrong one too many times, but she keeps coming back for more. Louder and raunchier than the band’s debut CD, “Beast” is made to order for a late-night spin in a noisy hot rod with flames on the sides.
