“The Master”(R): A young Navy veteran (Joaquin Phoenix) wanders aimlessly in the years after World War II, until he meets a charismatic cult leader (Philip Seymour Hoffman), aka The Master, who welcomes him in to The Cause.

“Holy Motors” (not rated, for mature audiences): Denis Lavant plays an actor who travels around Paris in a limo, keeping a series of appointments as different characters in various guises. In French and Chinese, with English subtitles.
“How to Survive a Plague” (not rated, for mature audiences): David France’s documentary on the history of AIDS activism.
“Chicken with Plums”(PG-13): An Iranian musician (Mathieu Amalric) ignores his family in pursuit of the perfect violin in this fable, written and directed by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud (“Persepolis”). In English and French, with subtitles.
“Chasing Mavericks” (PG): The film backstrokes into the life of legendary surfer Jay Moriarity, who, as a teenager (Jonny Weston), trained to ride the maverick waves in Santa Cruz. Gerard Butler co-stars as his mentor.
“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2”(PG-13): The last movie of the popular vampire saga — starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner — is improbable and silly, says Seattle Times movie critic Moira Macdonald, but that’s not to say there aren’t surprises, including “a welcome bit of bloody innovation toward the end.”
