“The Heat” (R): With their goofball chemistry, Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy elevate Paul Feig’s standard-issue cop action comedy, says Seattle Times movie critic Moira Macdonald. Bullock stars as an every-hair-in-place FBI agent and McCarthy as a loudmouthed beat cop partnering on a case that involves a ruthless drug lord. When the two are “on screen, as they nearly always are, ‘The Heat’ is good R-rated popcorn fun.”
“Pacific Rim” (PG-13): Humongous sea monsters battle ginormous robots to the death in director Guillermo del Toro’s sci-fi epic starring Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman and Idris Elba — who roars in a key scene, “Today we are canceling the Apocalypse!”
