★★★½ “RoboCop” (PG-13): This remake of the 1987 sci-fi thriller stays true to the original’s concept — fatally maimed Detroit policeman Alex Murphy (this time played by Joel Kinnaman) restored to life as a cyborg enforcer — “while branching out in all sorts of interesting directions,” writes reviewer Soren Andersen. “There are plenty of high-tech gunbattles … which make it a real pulse-pounder. But it’s the intelligence behind the gunplay that makes it distinctive.”
★★★ “Lone Survivor” (R): Outgunned and outnumbered, four Navy SEALs (Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Taylor Kitsch and Emile Hirsch) — on a reconnaissance mission in Afghanistan to hunt down a ruthless Taliban commander — battle fiercely and suffer grievously. Writer-director Peter Berg based his movie on an incident that took place in the summer of 2005.
