‘The Strain’

This new thriller comes from the mind of Guillermo del Toro (“The Devil’s Backbone,” “Pan’s Labyrinth”). He co-wrote and directed the pilot, which aired last Sunday, and serves as executive producer. The pilot was chock-full of his signature creepy touches: a “dead” plane full of outbreak victims, wormlike creatures burrowing under the skin — and I’m still trying to get that morgue scene (set to the strains of “Sweet Caroline”) out of my head. Corey Stoll (“House of Cards”) plays the head of a CDC branch investigating the outbreak. 10 p.m. Sunday, July 20, on FX (seattletimes.com/tvlistings).
